2015 Hall of Fame Ballot

Congratulations to Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio who were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I am honored that I was able to watch them playing.

Few interesting facts:
1. First time since 1955 (Joe DiMaggio, Gabby Hartnett, Ted Lyons and Dazzy Vance) that four players were inducted.

2. First time ever that three pitchers got inducted. Last year there were two (Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine) but it needs to go back all the way to 1992 to see multiple pitchers being inducted (Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers.)

3. Randy Johnson received 97.3%, the 8th highest all time. It may not mean much, but still says something about his dominant career. Seven players who received more percentage of votes were: Tom Seaver (98.9%), Nolan Ryan (98.7%), Cal Ripken Jr. (98.5%), Ty Cobb (98.2%), George Brett (98.2%), Hank Aaron (97.8%) and Tony Gwynn (97.6%). Greg Maddux is now the 9th with 97.2%. Maybe Jeter can push Maddux to the 10th. We'll see.

4. Out of curiosity, I added up all the votes, and got 4623. On average, voters marked 8.42 players. I did the same for 1992 (since it was conveniently open; see #2) I got 2609/430 = 6.07. It makes sense because people were keep saying 10 was not enough. [edit: according to Jay Jaffe of SI, it is the highest.] [edit2: according to another tweet of Jay Jaffe, 51% of the voters used all 10.]

5. According to tangotiger, Of BBWAA voters who show preference: 93% chose Smoltz over Mussina; 90% Smoltz over Schilling; 71% Schilling over Mussina. I personally think all of them are Hall of Famers.

6. Next year, Ken Griffey Jr. will be added to the candidates. Hopefully Moose gets better than 24.6% next year.

Rest in peace, Stuart Scott

Stuart Scott of ESPN died from cancer at age of 49 today. I offer my sincere condolence.

Arm & Hammer Park

Banuelos is no longer a Yankee, but I've been rooting for him for awhile (this picture of him and Betances is from 2011.) It reminded me of my trips to the Arm & Hammer Park this summer, home of the Trenton Thunder (the AA affiliate of the Yankees.)

vs RHB as LHP

Someone tweeted today saying "Having three left-handed relievers might not actually be a good thing. Weakens your options against strong RHB, though MLB is weak there" He was talking about Miller, Wilson, and Shreve just acquired by the Yankees.

Well, I just read an article saying Shreve who stands on the right side of the rubber does not give right-handed hitters a good look thus pitches well against them. I looked up the stats of Miller, Wilson, and Shreve against RHB, and the opponent hitters hit just 51 for 292 (.175 batting average) against them.

I went on and found a list of LHP, with GS <=5 and IP >= 10 in 2014, and sorted by the batting average against. Miller, Shreve, and Wilson were ranked 2nd, 6th, and 16th, respectively.

A group of solid relievers I see. Jacob Lindgren can be added, too. I guess Girardi doesn't have to worry too much about when to use his lefties in the pen.

매니 바뉄로스 <> 데이빗 카펜터, 체이슨 쉬리브 트레이드

애증(?!)의 바뉄로스가 애틀랜타 브레이브스로 넘어갔습니다. 다른 양키스팬들도 그러시겠지만 트레이드의 득실을 떠나서 많이 아쉽네요. 팜내 유망주순위에서 굉장히 예전부터 자리를 차지했었지만 아직 23살밖에 안 되었기도 하고, 힘든 시간 다 보내고 이제야 부활의 빛을 살짝 비추기 시작하던 차라 그런 것 같습니다. 터너필드도 자주 갔어서 그런지 브레이브스도 좋아하는데 거기서라도 빅리그에서 좋은 모습 많이 보여줬으면 좋겠습니다 ㅠ 

데이빗 카펜터는 지난 2년간 브레이브스에서 좋은 모습을 보여준 우완불펜투수입니다. 작년엔 61.0이닝동안 19홀드 3세이브를 올리면서 3.54의 평균자책점 (2.94 FIP)이었고요, 특히 올스타전 이후 29경기에서 29.1이닝동안 상대타자들은 .155 (103타수 16안타)의 타율과 .207의 출루율만 기록했다고 합니다. 29살이고요, 이제 연봉조정 첫 해에 들어간다고 하네요. 조엘 셔먼이 얘기하길 맥캔이 데이빗 카펜터 칭찬을 많이 했다고 합니다. 99마일까지 찍는 속구는 90마일대중반을 주로 형성하고 커터와 슬라이더가 좋다고도 덧붙였습니다. 양키스에서는 밀러/베탄시스 앞에서 7/8회를 맡아줄 것 같습니다. 애덤 워렌이 선발로 혹시 갈 수도 있겠네요. 

상대적으로 좀 덜 유명한 좌완투수 체이슨 쉬리브는 24살이고 작년에 처음 메이저리그무대를 밟았습니다. 15게임에서 12.1이닝을 던지며 승패없이 0.73의 평균자책점을 기록했네요. 90마일초반대의 속구와 슬라이더/스플리터를 던진다고 합니다. 어떤 트윗에서는 쉬리브의 K/9과 BB/9이 2013년의 6.2, 4.3에서 2014년엔 12.2, 1.7로 좋아진 점을 언급했고요, 어떤 트윗에서는 우스갯소리로 브레이브스가 실수로 바뉄로스의 4년전 스카우팅 리포트를 본 게 아니냐고 하기도 했습니다. 하드볼토크/로토월드의 매튜 폴리오는 쉬리브가 우타자들이 읽기 어려운 투구폼을 갖췄으며 2.73의 평균자책을 기록할 것으로 예측한 적이 있고 브레이브스 전담기자인 데이빗 오브라이언은 신인으로 인상적인 모습을 보여준 쉬리브와 아직 연봉이 높지 않은 카펜터를 브레이브스가 내준게 놀랍다고 평했습니다.

양키스는 이제 불펜부자입니다. 작년 팀이 전체적으로 부진한 가운데서도 베탄시스-로벗슨이 지켜준 뒷문은 든든했던만큼 올시즌도 좋은 모습 기대해봅니다.
