Jung-ho Kang in game 1 of the Playoff

Like MLB, KBO is playing postseason right now as well. Four teams (out of 9 teams) advance to postseason, and the second place team plays best-of-five series called "Playoff" with the winner of best-of-three series between the third and the fourth place teams, and the winner of the Playoff plays the first place team in the best-of-seven Korean Series. I don't usually get to watch a lot of KBO games mainly because the time difference, but today I watched the first game of the best-of-five series between Nexen Heroes (2nd) and LG Twins (4th.) Nexen Heroes' shortshop is Jung-ho Kang, who is likely to be posted this winter. I am going to write about how he did today.

At bat: Batting 5th. I believe LG's starter Woo isn't their #1 pitcher, but started today because they had to use their ace in the previous series. The commentator said Kang didn't do too well against Woo in the regular season; I went through the box scores and found out that he was 1 for 10 against him with 5K, 1BB, and 1HBP (the only hit was a homerun, though.) According to the commentator, Woo's best pitch is a breaking ball.

Bot 2nd
Runner on first with no outs, Kang swung at a slider at 1-2 count but it was a high fly ball to LF.

Bot 3rd
Runner on first with two outs at 2-2 count, a low slider came in and Kang hit a line drive above 3B to LF.I guess he knew the breaking ball was coming.

Bot 6th
- Kang hit a sharp groundball to P (0.548 seconds) which hit the pitcher on his right foot, and Kang was awarded an infield single on a close play at first (he was initially called out but Nexen challenged and overturned it.)
- Kang advanced to second base on a passed ball, then scored on a single to RF. KBO still allows catcher to block the home plate, but Kang was able to stick in his left hand between catcher's legs. A good base running of him. There was a contact and Kang was grabbing his left shoulder with the other hand while walking to the dugout, but I don't think he was injured.

Bot 7th
- Kang faced a new pitcher Lim, and got struck out on a 3-2 curve away from the strike zone.

On the field: Playing SS. Kang's known for his strong arm at SS.

Top 1st
- The first batter hit a slow groundball to Kang's right (2.231 seconds) which was recorded as an infield single. It was certainly a difficult ball to handle (diff rating 4/5) and Kang had to make the throw on the move. 1B failed to scoop one hopper, but the batter was fast and was safe regardless.
- The third batter hit a grounder right at 1B, and was able to convert 3-6-3 double play. Routine, but a strong/accurate throw back to 1B.

Top 3rd
- Runners on first and second with no outs, the batter hit a chopper to the pitcher after a fake bunt attempt, but as 3B and 1B charged in against the bunt, Kang had to cover the third base while 2B had to cover the second base, which resulted in an infield single. I don't think it was Kang's fault, but definitely a poor miscommunication among infielders (I personally think 2B had to run to first base if he wasn't going to beat the runner at second base.)

- Bases loaded with no outs, the batter hit a double over CF, one hop to the wall. However, the fence play was perfect, the relay was good, and a strong throw from Kang got the runner from second base out at home (I would give a negative base running to the runner, but it was a good defensive play.)

Top 4th
- A groundball came to Kang's slight left (1.590 seconds) and he took care of it easily.

Top 5th
- Runners on first and third with one out, the batter hit a groundball (1.866 seconds) toward second base. They were playing for double play, so Kang was able to pick it up, stepped on second base and threw to first base to complete a relatively easy 6-3 double play.

Top 6th
- A groundball to 2B, but was not able to turn two, because the ball was hit softly and the slide was good.
- During very next batter, there was a stolen base attempt but the battery successfully pitched out and Kang applied the tag for the third out.

Top 8th
- A groundball to 2B (1.370 seconds) and turned two this time. The throw was a bit low but Kang handled it perfectly.

Top 9th
- Runners on first with two outs, a groundball (2.310 seconds) to Kang's right, which was similar to the one in the first inning, but this time Kang was able to throw to second base and got the final out. The Heroes beat the Twins 6:3.
